So we’re absolutely delighted that PDSA Petsurance is sponsoring this year’s National Pet Show to celebrate our companions and the amazing contribution they make to our lives.
PDSA has humble beginnings – on 17 November 1917 a sign was hung outside a small basement in London’s East End. It invited local people to bring their sick and injured animals for free treatment. Inside, a single volunteer vet worked throughout the day, dressing wounds, fixing broken bones and dispensing medicine.
The initiative was the result of animal welfare pioneer, Maria Dickin CBE, who after touring some of the slums of East London, was horrified at the suffering. She wrote in her book, The Cry of the Animal:
“I was amazed and horrified to see the sufferings of these animals. In the streets were many dogs and cats walking on three legs, dragging along a broken or injured limb; others nearly blind with mange or covered with sores; nearly all looking dejected and miserable and searching for food in the gutter.
“The suffering and misery of these poor uncared-for creatures in our overcrowded area, was a revelation to me. I had no idea it existed, and it made me indescribably miserable.”
Maria was moved to set up her first dispensary and word quickly spread – the new service was soon in huge demand. She soon had to move to larger premises and began opening up further dispensaries, first in London, then further afield.
Within ten years PDSA had established 50 permanent dispensaries across the country, as well as mobile clinics which toured more rural areas.
Fast forward to today and Maria’s legacy is still going strong – with 48 PDSA Pet Hospitals from Aberdeen to Plymouth providing more than 2.7 million treatments a year, we are now the UK’s leading veterinary charity. Our dedicated teams see more than 5,000 pets every single day – that’s 13 pets a minute!
Not only do we provide life-saving emergency care and surgery, we also provide routine vaccinations and neutering, to help prevent pets getting sick in the first place. Our community teams educate owners and the wider public, as well as running thousands of children’s workshops to help the next generation of pet owners learn how to keep their pets healthy and happy.
We also know that pet insurance is one of the best ways of protecting your pets from unexpected vet fees. So PDSA Petsurance offers a range of cover levels, all with 3rd party liability for dogs, to suit the needs of owners and their budget. The ‘Ultimate’ policies have even been rated 5-star by Defaqto, and every policy purchased supports PDSA life-saving charitable work, helping poorly pets in need.
We’re very proud of our century of caring, of helping to protect that most precious bond between owners and their beloved pets. We can’t wait to meet you and your pets at the National Pet Show in November.
